Firearm Transfers

No matter whether you’ve found that perfect firearm online or you want to buy a firearm from a friend, you can protect yourself and legally have that firearm transferred at Olde English Outfitters. It is our goal to make this process simple and pain free.

TYPES OF TRANSFER:

  1. Incoming Transfer from an Out of State Dealer or Individual: If you have purchased a firearm from an out-of-state dealer or individual and want it shipped to us for legal transfer, please call us at (937) 667-3315 during our regular store hours so we can get the process started for you. You may also email us at sales@oeoutfitters.com for details and information.
  2. Outgoing Transfer to or through an Out of State Dealer: If you have sold a firearm to someone out of state or you want to send a one to relative who lives out of state, you would need to bring the firearm to us during regular store hours to start this process. The individual on the receiving end should have already contacted a local dealer where they live. You would need to provide us with that information and a contact person so that we can obtain a valid copy of that dealer’s Federal Firearm License (FFL).
  3. Private Party Transfer: If you want to purchase a firearm from, or sell a firearm to, another private party and want to do so with a background check; both parties should come to Olde English with the firearm. The buyer of the firearm must have a current, valid photo ID with their correct address. The buyer must also complete the form 4473 and a background check is done if required. (Ohio CHL licensees with an issue date after March 23, 2015 may be exempt from a NICS check.) If the background check response is “Proceed” or the buyer is exempt from the check, the gun can then be transferred into our system from the seller and back out to the buyer. If the NICS response is a “delay”, the seller has the option to relinquish the gun and wait until the delay is over or to cancel the sale. This process can take 30-60 minutes here in the store, so you will want to allow ample time.

FEES:

Our fee for firearm transfers is $35.00 for the first firearm and $10.00 for each additional firearm on the same transfer. If we are shipping the firearm for you, shipping will be charged based on the size and weight of the package. We want to make this as easy as possible, so if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at (937) 667-3315.

FAQ’s about Firearm Transfers:

This is one of the most misunderstood things that we do for our customers. We will try to dispel some of those misunderstandings here by publishing some of those Frequently Asked Questions.

  1. Why do you charge a fee for this service? While it is correct that this is what we do all day long anyway, there is still a “cost” incurred by the business in processing your transfer. Someone from our staff will spend time gathering the details of your transfer on the phone or in person and will send our license to the shipper. Our receiving staff will spend time processing your firearm into inventory and building a sales order so it can be transferred to you. Our sales staff at the counter will spend time with you filling out your form 4473 and verifying your identification. The office and customer service staff will also spend time processing your background check and finalizing the transfer of the firearm to you. In addition to the man-hours expended, the bigger issue is the liability involved with every transfer whether we were the “seller” of the firearm or not. Every detail of this process must be correct or it could endanger our license. All of those factors combine to equal what we feel is a very modest charge.

  1. What do I need to do to have a gun transferred through Olde English? Let’s try to break it down step-by-step…
  1. My tracking information says my gun arrived. Why can’t I pick it up right now? This is a two-fold issue. The first reason is that your box was not the only one to arrive on our dock. We do everything we can to make sure your transfer is processed in a timely and efficient manner, but most of the time it will take a couple of hours if it arrives on a weekday. If it shows up on Saturday, it may be Monday before we can get it processed into our system. The second issue is a technology issue. Once we receive the gun into our inventory system, we have to wait a little while for it to populate into our Point-of-Sale system so the registers can transfer the firearm. It is simply two computers that talk on a schedule and need time to communicate.

  1. If I buy a gun from an individual in another state, can the individual ship the gun directly to Olde English? The answer to this question is “Yes”, but some vital information is required to do it correctly. In order for us to process this properly, we need to have the following prior to shipping.

  1. What happens to my transferred firearm if I don’t pass a background check? That is largely up to the seller, but most understand that this can happen and have a return process specifically for “denied” transactions. If you are a first-time buyer, it would be good to check this ahead of time. On our end, the transfer fee would still need to be paid along with the return shipping since all of the costs and liability still apply to the failed transaction. If this happens on a “Private Party” transfer and the current owner has already relinquished ownership, the law dictates that the original owner would have to undergo a background check to reclaim the firearm.
